Reason? Think Not

Lyle Northey (Silent/Boomer)

Another voice of elected political reason (?) on the issue of guns. This individual feels that the 2nd amendment is far more important to preserve and protect than even possibly his own life. How can anyone not see the importance of every person being able to go into a store and buy a gun without regard to training, knowledge, or mental stability be checked.

He does not like the idea that cars and ownership of a vehicle are likened to owning a gun. We all know that a car driven by someone that is impaired in any way can lead to an accident and possibly harm those in the immediate area of operation. A gun is a safe item that can kill depending on the type of gun miles from where the person that has that gun may accidentally or intentionally fire that weapon.

So let us concede that the ownership of guns is a right not a privilege and that all gun owners are sane, not frothing at the mouth maniacs when someone tries to pry it out of my hands while I am still alive, and get on with the business of protecting the rest of us from this sane rational person. A license is required and a background check, and that is just so wrong. You need a license to drive a car, own a boat, get married, become a doctor, lawyer, plummer, electrician, druggist, teacher, pilot and other things as well, you do not need a license to become a politician, or a minister or an activist, all you need to able to do is know how to either relay information that has meaning and hopefully improve things, or how to shoot off your mouth and say nothing of value except that someone is trying to take something away or change the status of something and it displeases you.

We have many among us that would limit freedom of speech because the words are offensive to someone. Destroy a book or cause a newspaper to go out of business because we do not agree with their point of view . The practice is called censorship and we have had many attempts to censor speech, literature, movies and public displays  because the content did not match the more vocal of the local populace. Words can and do hurt and harm and as a courtesy to others we should not offend just to offend, nor should we remain silent when we are assailed, but rather we should reply as best we can without being derogatory to others.

When the issue is a gun, if you take the time and effort you will realize that the majority of gun owners view that gun as a problem solver. The use of the matter that is between the ears becomes nothing more than the reflected action of Aim and Fire. For some, using the gun is more fun than using what is between the legs, and far more exciting than using the matter between the ears.

So let us get back to basics on the ownership of weapons with the requirement to make sure the possesses of said guns are not complete fools. You don’t like it but gun ownership should require the background check with a periodic review of both mental and physical, it should require a yearly license renewal with fee to go with it. That ownership should require liability insurance just like your own policy does as or owning a business does. The use of the gun for any reason should require a trial . If the result is a not guilty verdict then a hearing on wrongful death needs to be conducted as most of the deaths that occur seem to occur from intentional effort to kill not accidental. What will it prove, accountability for one’s actions, and were you smart enough to insure yourself from yourself knowing that the gun is going to make you take actions that a thinking person would not take.

When we reach to point of far to many carrying guns then the odds are in favor of you either being the person that keeps someone else from going home or not making it home yourself, and oh what a wonderful world it will be your 2nd amendment rights have been protected and your family gets to make it without you cause your gun got in the way of your good sense.
