Dwain Northey (Gen X)
There are 2 commonly used words that are frequently used that those that use them do not seem to understand the difference… well they use one, but they really should be using the other. The 2 works are (TO) and (FOR)… Ok I just heard a WFT is he on about now from everyone that has taken the time to open my page.
Everyday I hear that the Republicans and their current messiah have do so much for this country… they have done more (FOR) civil right, women’s rights, the economy, the working class, and any number of things they want to claim dominion over. What they actually should be saying is they have done more (TO) all of the things I took the time to list and if they used the proper verbiage, they would be absolutely correct.
So, let’s define the 2 words.
Use ‘TO’ when the reason or purpose is a verb. Use ‘FOR’ when the reason or purpose is a noun.
To is a preposition and a versatile little word that can be used to say many things. You can use it to indicate a goal or a direction of movement, as well as a place of arrival. That’s the way you use it when you say you’re going to class tomorrow.
TO: a—used as a function word to indicate purpose, intention, tendency, result, or end
came to our aid; drink to his health
b—used as a function word to indicate the result of an action or a process
broken all to pieces; go to seed; to their surprise, the train left on time
FOR: a—used as a function word to indicate purpose
a grant for studying medicine
b—used as a function word to indicate an intended goal
left for home acted for the best
c—used as a function word to indicate the object or recipient of a perception, desire, or activity
Now that I have define the terms next time a Trumpubican tells you all the grand things that their dear leader did for the country you can tell them, ‘He honestly did them (TO) the country against our will not (FOR) us.’ His attempted insurrection was not (FOR) anyone but himself it was (TO) take away the rights and will of the people. When the Republicans ban abortion it is not (FOR) the protection of the ‘unborn’, it is (TO) take rights away for anyone that can get pregnant from having dominion over their bodies, banning books isn’t (FOR) protecting children it is (TO) stop those children from gaining information that they disagree with.
So everyone go out and lets all start reconciling the terms… Democrats are (FOR) change and progress, Republicans what (TO) take us back to the era of the robber barons.
Thanks again for putting up with my rant.
